Role of Disclosing Psychological Distress and Intention to Seek Counseling in the Relationship Between Attitude, Stigma and Working Alliance: A Conceptual Paper

Siti Nurafif Naim, Chua Bee Seok, Muhammad Idris Bullare @ Bahari, and Patricia Joseph Kimong

Volume : vol 6

Publication Date : 2022-12-31

Keywords : working alliance, intention to seek counseling, attitude, stigma, distress disclosure

Abstract : Various psychotherapeutic approaches have acknowledged the crucial component of working alliance in the helping relationship. Utilization of counseling service by university students is very low despite easy accessibility with minimal or no fees. Avoidance of counseling, even when a student may benefit from it, may lead to unattended psychological problems that are likely to affect their academic achievement. If a student does enter counseling, the counselor has an important role to ensure a strong working alliance in the relationship. The working alliance component is fundamental in the helping process to facilitate better life outcomes for clients. Ruptures in the working alliance may lead to reduced motivation to return to counseling. While attitude and stigma are known factors associated with counseling avoidance among university students in the Malaysian context, the three working alliance components based on Bordin’s (1979) working alliance conceptualization have not been adequately examined. The three components to the working alliance concept are as follows: (i) Goal; (ii) Task; and (iii) Bond. This conceptual paper discusses the working alliance and the role of distress disclosure and intention to seek counseling in the relationship between attitude and stigma amongst university students seeking professional psychological help in Malaysia. The Theory of Reasoned Action is the main theoretical framework referred in guiding the discussion of this conceptual paper.

Investigating the interactional effects of socio- demographic factors and sleep quality on academic achievement among Malaysian undergraduate students

Mazni Mustapha, Thurgha A/P Ramasamy, and Noorma Razali

Volume : vol 6

Publication Date : 2022-12-31

Keywords : sleep quality, socio-demographic factors, Malaysian undergraduate students, academic performance

Abstract : Sleep is one of the vital aspects of our life. Its importance however, often receives a lack of attention especially amongst university students who would commonly replace some hours of night sleep with alternative activities. Whilst most studies have reported that sleep disturbances could bring harm to a person’s life, there is still a lack of studies that examine the interaction effects of socio-demographic factors and sleep quality on academic achievement. Hence, this study aimed to identify: (1) the relationship between sleep quality and academic performance based on the Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of university students, (2) differences in the academic performance of these students based on their study programmes, year of study, gender, ethnicities and quality of sleep, and (3) the interaction effects of these demographic variables and quality of sleep on the students’ academic performance. A sample of 107 undergraduate students from a public university in Sabah, Malaysia, voluntarily participated in this study by completing a set of questionnaires. The results revealed a positive correlation between sleep quality and academic performance. Those who were ‘good- sleepers’ showed the tendency of low academic achievement when they reached senior year, whilst ‘poor-sleepers’ were more likely to have higher academic achievement at the later year of studying. The findings imply that having a ‘high quality of longer waking hours’ in fulfilling academic commitments is probably a worthwhile effort in maintaining good grades during the final year of studying. The findings support the social learning theory that a person could alter his behaviour in order to fit with the demands of the environment.

Volume : vol 6

Publication Date : 2022-12-31

Keywords : Pengurusan emosi, kehilangan ahli keluarga, pandemik COVID-19

Volume : vol 6

Publication Date : 2022-12-31

Keywords : DASS-21, reliability, validity, psychometric properties

Abstract : The aim of this study is to test the psychometric properties of the 21-item Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS-21). The DASS-21 is a set of three self-report scales consisting of 21 items to measure the emotional states of depression, anxiety, and stress. A sample of 380 (256 female, 124 male) university students in Malaysia were randomly selected to participate in this study. The reliability of the DASS-21 was evaluated by measuring the internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha) reliability. The convergent, concurrent, and discriminant properties were examined to evaluate the validity of the scale. Item analysis was also performed through the item-total correlation approach. The reliability of the DASS-21 showed excellent Cronbach’s alpha values of .916 and .891 for the subscales of depression and anxiety respectively, while the stress subscale showed low reliability with Cronbach’s alpha value of .472. The convergent validity of the DASS-21 was tested by examining the relationship between the dimensions of the scale which have moderate to strong and positive correlations ranging from r = .561 to .777. The concurrent validity was assessed by examining the relationship between the three subscales of DASS-21 and the score of the Warwick- Edinburgh Mental Well-Being Scale (WEMWBS) which showed negative and significant correlations ranging from r = -.377 to -.615. The discriminant validity was evaluated by factor analyzing items of DASS-21 and items of World Health Organization Quality of Life, WHOQOL- Bref (Field Trial Version). All items of DASS-21 were loaded in one component while the items of WHOQOL-Bref (Field Trial Version) were loaded in another component, except for 3 items. The item analysis showed that the item-total correlation coefficient for three subscales of DASS-21 exceeded the recommended value of .30, except for item 14. From this study, the DASS-21 showed a high reliability and validity score and can be used to assess and measure mental health states among university students in Malaysia during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, further studies are required to enhance the evidence of reliability and validity for the DASS-21 instrument .

Hajah Siti Rafidah Binti Haji Md Said

Volume : vol 6

Publication Date : 2022-12-31

Keywords : spiritual intelligence, Self-Report Inventory, Brunei’s teacher, reliability

Abstract : Spiritual intelligence (SQ) promotes better health behaviour and quality of life. At work, those with a higher level of spirituality live longer, happier, satisfied with their job, and more productive lives. In the pursuit of holistic education, the role of SQ in shaping teachers’ well-being and effectiveness has gained recognition worldwide. However, evaluating the reliability and validity of assessment instruments within specific cultural contexts is essential. The researcher delves into a pilot study conducted in Brunei in this article. It focuses on the reliability of a Spiritual Intelligence Self-Report Inventory Instrument (SISRI-24) developed by King (2008) and tailored to Brunei's teachers. The scale was initially developed and validated in Canada. The pilot study employed quantitative data collection and data analysis. A sample of 116 teachers from various schools in Brunei voluntarily participated in the study. According to the results, the overall reliability value was 0.832. Based on these findings, the SISRI-24 questionnaires have a high-reliability level. It is suitable to use among teachers in Brunei.
